Melissa calls it the “meh life.”

Between menopause symptoms, weight gain, busy schedules, aging parents, and shifting identities, midlife can feel like you’re losing control of your body and your energy. Melissa sees it every day in her coaching practice — women who are exhausted, overwhelmed, and disconnected from themselves.

And here’s the real truth she drops:

“Very rarely is it pleasure that motivates women to change. It’s pain.”

For many women, the turning point isn’t wanting bikini abs…

It’s the moment they don’t recognize themselves in a photo.

Or the doctor says their blood sugar is climbing.

Or someone at the grocery store asks, “How far along are you?” (yes… it happens).

That moment of pain becomes the spark.

Before you buy the leggings, the supplements, or the fancy gym membership, Melissa recommends something surprisingly simple:

👉 Just start walking.

Walking boosts your mood, shifts your mindset, lowers stress, lubricates your joints, and gently wakes up your body. It’s the easiest way to start building a routine — especially if you feel stuck or overwhelmed.

It also starts to rebuild trust with yourself, which is HUGE for midlife motivation.

You walk.

You feel proud.

You want to do more.

And suddenly the next healthy step doesn’t feel impossible.

This episode dives into one of the most important midlife health tools:

strength training.

Melissa uses a brilliant analogy:

Imagine your body as a water balloon.

If you just lose fat without building muscle, the balloon deflates and sags.

Strength training fills the balloon with support.

It shapes your body, boosts metabolism, protects your joints, and increases bone density — a massive factor for midlife women facing hormonal changes and increased osteoporosis risk.

And here’s the kicker:

“If you strength train, you are literally protecting everything in your body.”

This is why cardio-only routines don’t cut it anymore — especially in perimenopause and menopause when hormones are shifting and cortisol spikes from intense workouts can backfire.

Strength training is slow, intentional, powerful… and it works.

Melissa and I both agree:

Midlife transformation starts in your mind before it ever shows up in your body.

If you walk into the gym thinking:

“I don’t belong here,”

your brain will scan for evidence and “prove you right.”

But if you shift your mindset to:

“I’m strong, I belong, I’m capable,”

your actions begin to match the identity you’re choosing.

This identity shift — not motivation — is what makes long-term change possible.


Most midlife women feel intimidated walking into the weight room — especially when it’s filled with men slamming dumbbells or machines they’ve never touched.

Melissa recommends:

  • Start with the machines — the pictures guide you
  • Ask for one free training session and use it to learn the equipment, not get crushed
  • Hire a coach temporarily to build confidence
  • Create a simple folder on your phone with quick videos or photos for reference
  • Repeat your “I belong here” mantra until it feels true

Your 40s and 50s are not too late to learn something new.

In fact, they’re the perfect time.


One of the biggest takeaways from the episode is this:

👉 No one is coming to save you.

👉 You have to schedule yourself FIRST.

👉 You are allowed to put your workout on the calendar before everyone else’s needs.

Midlife women are conditioned to prioritize kids, partners, parents, work, errands, pets… everyone but themselves.

Melissa is clear:

Your health depends on boundaries.

Your confidence grows through consistency.

And your success accelerates with community.

Surround yourself with women who want what you want.

Be around people who are growing, healing, lifting, and choosing themselves.

Because the people around you absolutely influence your outcomes.

Melissa’s story of losing 65 pounds after her third baby, falling apart emotionally, and rebuilding her strength is something every midlife woman can relate to.
